Astrophotography Rigs |
Three astrophotography rigs are described to assist new astrophotographers seeking to understand the hardware required to configure their own imaging rigs. The first is a Wide Field-of-View (FoV) rig based upon a refractor with a 264mm focal length; the second is an Intermediate FoV rig based upon a refractor with a 444mm focal length; the third is a Narrower FoV rig based upon a telescope with a 1000mm focal length. |
Narrow FOV Rig: 1000mm Focal Length Maksutov-Newtonian
Maksutov-Newtonian telescopes offer excellent optical performance at a much more affordable price than similarly sized refractors. The optical design produces very well corrected fields of view with stars free of coma at the corners. However, Mak-Newts are heavier than other similar sized telescopes due to the inclusion of internal baffles and the thick corrector lens which is also prone to the formation of dew.
